In Grade 5/6, we are using modified games, small sided games and lead up games to sports using the Teaching Games for Understanding curriculum model. We start with fitness elements as well as types of tag and mini-games. We then move towards improving sport skills and physical literacy through playing games. We will also be using the Sport Education curriculum model in order to teach skills like teamwork, peer teaching, sportsmanship, officiating, and so much more.
Note for Parents:
It is very good to keep your children active in many activities outside of school at this age. Find things they really enjoy and monitor that these activities are going well. They need to have positive experiences in these activities because their emotional relationship that they build towards physical activity even at a young age could influence the amount of activity they will continue to do when they are older. We are aiming towards building a love for activity so they continue to be active and healthy for life.
Keep reinforcing that being physically active is good for your body, your brain, and your heart.
Keep reinforcing about good foods and proper hydration, and how good food will give you energy to be more physically active and to help you recover faster
Keep reinforcing that bad foods or not enough of the right foods can lower your immune system, cause body or brain dysfunction, etc.
Always praise effort rather than accomplishment to foster a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset.
You can use the PLAY Assessments to check their skill level and figure out how to improve their proficiency at certain fundamental skills.
Play catch with them, kick a ball with them, practice dribbling or playing sports, try skipping, running, dancing, and jumping rope.
