In Grade 3, I am incorporating many lead up games to sports as well as modified and small sided games using the Teaching Games for Understanding curriculum model. We are still moving in a variety of locomotor and non-locomotor movements like in the first 3 years of PHE at Assumption just to continue to refine all movement skills and build phsyical literacy.
In Grade 3 Physical Education:
we explore many different types of movements in all different pathways
we play with many different manipulatives from beanbags to hula hoops, and juggling scarves
we do some tumbling, rolling, balancing, and other gymnastic movements
we learn to throw and catch objects in a variety of ways
we do cooperative games like the parachute
we discuss healthy and unhealthy food choices and proper water consumption
we play many modified sport games and small sided games
we discuss and demonstrate fair play, cooperation, teamwork, and sportsmanship
It is very good to keep your children active in many activities outside of school at this age. Find things they really enjoy, encourage them, and monitor that these activities are going well. They need to have positive experiences in these activities because their emotional relationship that they build towards physical activity even at a young age could influence the amount of activity they will continue to do when they are older.
Keep reinforcing that being physically active is good for your body, your brain, and your heart.
Keep reinforcing about good foods and proper hydration, and how good food will give you energy to be more physically active.
Keep reinforcing about how sugar, candies, and certain foods can give children negative energy and can be a cause of misbehaviour in some children.
You can use the PLAY Assessments to check their skill level and figure out how to improve their proficiency at certain fundamental skills.
Play catch with them, kick a ball with them, practice dribbling or playing sports, try skipping, running, dancing, and jumping rope.
