Grade 1 Physical and Health Education
Link to the Grade 1 Physical and Health Education Curriculum
Grade 1 Physical Education is much the same as Kindergarten Physical Education except with some of the activities we are completing them with partners and groups. We are also refining movement in all areas but still the focus is on being active in a wide variety of movements while having fun. I have copied the brief description of Kindergarten Physical Education below because they are so similar.
In Grade 1 Physical Education:
we explore many different types of movements in all different pathways
we play with many different manipulatives from beanbags to hula hoops, and juggling scarves
we do some tumbling, rolling, balancing, and other gymnastic movements
we learn to throw and catch objects in a variety of ways
we do cooperative games like the parachute
we discuss healthy and unhealthy food choices and proper water consumption
The most important thing at this age in terms of Physical Education is to do a wide variety of fun movements to improve physical literacy.
It is very good to teach that being physically active is good for your body, your brain, and your heart.
It is also great to teach about good foods and proper hydration, and how good food will give you energy to be more physically active.
You can also teach about how sugar, candies, and certain foods can give children negative energy and can be a cause of misbehaviour in some children.
You can use the PLAY Assessments to check their skill level and figure out how to improve their proficiency at certain fundamental skills.
Play catch with them, kick a ball with them, practice dribbling or playing sports, try skipping, running, dancing, and jumping rope.
